A couple of weeks ago we went to visit the American Cemetery here in Manila. By some coincidence, we went the day after Memorial day, which was kinda fitting. It's a very beautiful place, the grounds and flora are well kept up and colorful, and it's all very green. There were so many small white crosses, it seemed that they went on for a long way, only stopping at the edge of the modern skyscrapers that surround the cemetery. It's set in the middle of Global City, and yet in the cemetery it's quiet and peaceful.
There were dozens of walls that were about 10 feet high, covered with names of people that had fought and died in WWII, and their bodies weren't recovered. The thousands of crosses are for the bodies that were recovered. Thousands of names, both American and Filipino names mingled together. It was beautiful, and yet so sad.
